About Us

The New Hampshire Tree Farm Program is an application of the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) and has been operated by volunteers through the New Hampshire Tree Farm Executive Committee since 1950. The American Tree Farm System is a nationwide program that encourages private forest owners to actively manage their forests in a sustainable manner for multiple values.

A Tree Farm is a privately owned forest managed to produce timber with added benefits of improved wildlife habitat, water quality, recreation, and scenic values. There are also municipal watersheds, school forests and other public ownerships certified as Tree Farms.

Nationwide, over 80,000 Tree Farmers manage 24 million acres of woodlands for pride, profit and pleasure and help meet the nation's growing need for wood and paper products.

The Tree Farm System was launched in 1941 by the nation's wood-using industries. The system is managed by the American Tree Farm System. Operating funds for the program come from forest landowners, forest industry and others interested in encouraging good forestry on private lands.

Our Mission

To promote the growing and harvesting of renewable forest resources while protecting the environment and increasing public understanding of all benefits of productive forestry

Our Goals

  1. Accomplish excellent forestry on the land by educating and motivating forest landowners to grow, harvest, and renew forest resources on a sustainable basis in an environmentally sound manner.

  2. Communicate the benefits of excellent forestry by documenting and publicizing Tree Farm accomplishments by:

    1. Providing working demonstrations of forest stewardship so that other landowners can follow the best examples.

    2. Gaining support for Tree Farmers because they provide multiple forest resource benefits to society.

    3. Promote better public understanding of the role of forest lands in meeting human needs for wood, water, wildlife and recreation.

  3. Protect and promote the rights of Tree Farmers to manage the forest resources.

  4. Build mutually supportive relationships between wood using industries and Tree Farmers.
